#Data Rant: US Zip Codes should be alphanumeric: 1) Leading zeros. 50% of the time I get a data file with zip codes from New England, the leading zeros are missing, making a 5 digit zip into 4 digits. Zip codes should be stored as a text field, not numeric, but try telling that to a salesperson slinging contacts in Excel. 2) We could run out. Not really, but there are 42,000 zip codes and 100,000 possible 5-digit number combinations. By comparison, a 5-digit alphanumeric code has 60,466,176 💪. As a compromise, I'll take a numeric zip code without leading zeros - there are still 90,000 possible zip codes.
